Keyboard and ⌘K
Search or jump anywhere with ⌘K, move between areas with G then a letter, and decide things with single keys.
CareerBot works fully with the keyboard. Single keys act only outside text fields, menus and dialogs, so typing is never taken for a command.
⌘K: Search or jump to
⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux) opens Search or jump to from anywhere, and closes it again. It finds any screen or action by name. The screen you're on lists its own actions first; then come Go to (every screen and sub-page), Help and Account.
Type two letters or more and it also searches everything in your workspace, whichever screen you're on: companies, roles (by title, or title and company, with their fit score), pursuits, the people at them, directions, resumes (base, direction and tailored), your record (roles and breaks, facts, projects, skills, tools, certifications, insights and stories), limits, and these docs. Each kind shows its five best matches under its own heading, and choosing one opens it where it lives. Every word you type must match. Record entries that are still proposed, or that you rejected, are found too, and marked. Searching is free.
- Arrow keys move, ↵ opens, Esc closes.
- ⌘↵ opens the choice in the pane beside, rather than in place.
- Help has All shortcuts, Contact support (an email to team@careerbot.dev on careerbot.dev; on a copy you run yourself, a new issue on GitHub; see Getting help), Take the tour of the screen you're on, and on large screens Collapse sidebar or Expand sidebar.
- Account has Sign out.

? for every shortcut
? opens All shortcuts, grouped as Anywhere, Lists, Review and Companies.
Lists
On every screen with a list:
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| J | Next |
| K | Previous |
| ↓ / ↑ | Next / previous row, while the list has focus |
| ↵ | Open |
| Esc | Close the item |
Selecting several
In Pursuits, Companies, Skills, Tools, Certifications and a Review group's list, you can act on several rows at once. Checkboxes show only once you start selecting, never when you just point at a row:
- Select in the list's ⋯ menu (or Select all), or Select in a row's right-click menu.
- X or Space on the row with focus.
- ⇧-click or ⌘-click (Ctrl-click on Windows and Linux) on a row.
While you're selecting, a click checks or unchecks a row instead of opening it, and a bar at the bottom shows how many are checked and what you can do to all of them, each with its key. Done or Esc stops selecting and unchecks everything; so does acting on what's checked.
Deciding: Review and elsewhere
On a decision card, in Review and wherever a proposed item opens (Record, Goals), the same letters decide it:
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| A | Approve |
| E | Edit |
| R | Reject, at once; Reject with a note in the card's ⋯ menu asks why first |
| U | Undo |
| J / K | Next / Previous card |
In Review the arrow keys decide too: → approves, ← rejects, ↑ edits and ↓ rejects with a note. S skips: the card comes back at the end of the group. The arrows leave alone whatever already uses them: a text field, a menu, a list of rows, a slider, or an open dialog.
A card's other actions show their own letter on the button (for example M Maybe on a company to rate). Where a card asks you to write (an edit, an answer), ⌘↵ saves and Esc cancels.
Screen keys
Each screen's page lists its own keys. The main ones:
| Screen | Keys |
|---|---|
| Pursuits | S Start, I Interested, R Not for me, O open the posting, L write a letter, / Ask about this role, X select the row |
| Companies | T Target, M Maybe, R Not for me, E edit the website or job board, N add a note, X select the row |
| Resumes | L Layout, H History, U undo a line change |
| Record | N new story, ⇧N quick note, ⇧T Talk, ⇧V Versions, ⌘S save, F add a fact, B add a break |
| Goals | E edit, ⌘↵ save, . show a direction's resume |
Tours
Today (with the frame), Review, Pursuits, Companies, Resumes, Record, Goals and Settings' Google Drive section each have a short tour. Take the tour is in ⌘K and in the screen's ⋯ menu, and your first visit offers it once. Tours never click, spend or change anything.
