Your goals
How CareerBot turns your goals story into directions and limits, and fills each direction in for search and resumes.
You say what you want next in one goals story, in your own words: the work, the pay, where, and what to avoid. CareerBot reads it into directions (kinds of work you're drawn to) and limits (what a role must or should meet). You review both in Goals and Review. See Writing your goals.
The steps
Turning what you want into directions and limits.
Read my goals
You choose Read my goals.
Reads
- Your wordsYour goals story
- Approved onlyYour roles and facts
- Approved onlyYour directions and limits, kept as they are
- Rejected, to skipDirections and limits you rejected
May
Propose directions, and limits as clear values you can check and correct.
May not
Assume a limit you didn’t state. It leaves out anything it would have to guess.
Filters from wording
You edit a limit’s wording.
Reads
- That limit’s wording, and nothing else
May
Set the limit’s filters to match what it now says.
May not
Read your goals story for it.
Directions and search criteria
You choose Fill in or Suggest more on Goals.
Reads
- Approved onlyYour record, insights, limits and directions
- Your wordsYour stories, for background only
- Rejected, to skipDirections you rejected or haven’t reviewed yet, so it doesn’t repeat them
- Approved onlyYour projects and their facts
May
Fill in each direction’s positioning, target titles, the market’s words for the work, which stories carry over, and its search criteria. Suggest new directions.
May not
Overwrite anything you approved.
Reading your goals
Read my goals runs when you choose Read my goals (or Read my goals again after a change). It reads your goals story against your approved record, directions and limits, and proposes:
- Directions: the kinds of work you say you're drawn to.
- Limits, each as a value in plain words and as filters CareerBot can check: pay, place, seniority and the like. A limit is firm when you said it's a must, and a preference otherwise. It may hold for every direction or only some, and only in some situations, like a lower level you'd accept to change fields.
A value you didn't give is left out, never filled with a typical one: no pay ceiling you didn't name, no distance you didn't give. Directions and limits you rejected are passed so they aren't proposed again in any wording, and a limit resting only on a passage you rejected is skipped. Your approved directions and limits are kept as settled.
Your goals story is read only here. Other steps never see it; they read only the directions and limits you approved.
Filters from wording
When you edit a limit's wording and leave its filters alone, Filters from wording reads that wording, and nothing else, and sets the limit's filters to match what it now says. It never reads your goals story for it. If you change the limit again while it runs, its answer isn't saved.
Filling in directions
Directions and search criteria runs on its own when you approve a direction that has nothing filled in, and when you choose Fill in on a direction (or Fill in all). One pass fills them in one direction at a time, one call each, so directions approved while it runs join it. For each direction it proposes:
- Positioning: how to present your record for this kind of work.
- The titles to aim at (usually 10 to 20: the names companies use for the same work at your level, with their seniority and scope variants), and the words the market uses for the work.
- Which of your stories carry over and which need reframing, each citing approved facts.
- How your past titles translate.
- Search criteria, used to find companies. Its industries are the ones this kind of work points to; the industries your company limits want are added to every direction's search on their own, ahead of these.
Suggest more proposes directions you hadn't considered. A suggestion has to rest on approved facts, or it's dropped.
Detail and criteria are reviewed separately, and only approved ones feed resumes and search. What you approved is never overwritten; directions you rejected or that are still waiting aren't proposed again.
When you change an approved direction's title or summary, roles ranked before the change are marked, so you can rank them again. See Roles.
