Companies

How CareerBot screens the companies a search finds, fills in their details, and when it spends Apollo credits.

A company search in Companies looks for companies that match your approved directions' search criteria, through Apollo, or through a web search when you haven't added an Apollo key (see Finding companies). Two AI steps then work on what it found: one sorts out the companies that don't hire for themselves, the other fills in what each remaining company does and how well it fits. Without Apollo, the web search also names your Companies you like used to find more like them, as "Companies they like (find more like these)", at no extra cost. Finding a company you like by name in Search settings is free: no AI call, Brave search or Apollo credit.

When you choose Find companies without an Apollo key, or with Finding companies set to Apollo + AI.

  • PublicThe website of a company you named, for its name

May

Find up to 15 companies for each direction that fit it, hiring or not, and up to 15 hiring for its titles now, each with the page it was seen on.

May not

Keep anything it says about a company beyond its name and website, or bring back a past employer or a company you turned down.

Screening

Screen companies runs after each company search. It sorts the companies found into places to work and everything else: recruiters and staffing agencies, job boards, associations, government, schools, media and investors. Clear cases are sorted by rule first; the rest by a quick AI read of each company's name and website, and nothing more.

Nothing is deleted. A company it sorts out moves to Set aside, under Not a place to work, where you can Restore it. You can also mark a company Not a place to work yourself. Screening costs no Apollo credits.

Filling in

Fill in companies runs after each search, and when you choose Fill in details or Check again. It fills in places to work from free sources first, in batches, strongest-sourced companies first:

  • What the company builds. One AI call per batch writes a one-sentence summary from the company's own website text only. A site that turns away direct requests is read through a page reader that loads public pages. With no readable site, a well-known company gets a summary from the model's general knowledge, labelled as such.
  • Its job board. In order: a board link you gave; a link on the company's site or careers page; a web search result that names the company, if you added a Brave Search key; a guessed board, kept only if it links back to the company's site; and last, only if you turned it on, Apollo's job postings. From the board it counts open roles, remote ones, and roles matching your directions' titles inside your approved Location limit.
  • Fit. Once details are in, it judges each company against each direction that has approved criteria: strong, some, weak or none, with a reason, from the summary, the roles, the direction and your approved limits.

With Check companies against your goals set to Rank or Hide in Companies, ⋯ > Search settings, the same call also checks each company against your approved company goals: fits, partly, doesn't, or can't tell, with a reason. It's a signal only. With Hide, ones that don't fit move to Doesn’t fit your goals; Keep anyway keeps one. Companies you like yourself are never set aside. Check all again in Search settings checks every company again against your goals and directions after you change them.

You decide which companies matter: rate each Target, Maybe or Not for me. Roles are read only from Targets and Maybe companies. See Roles.

Apollo credits

Apollo bills in credits, on your own Apollo plan. AI steps on this page are paid from your AI budget; Apollo credits are spent only for these:

  • Company searches. Find companies shows its estimate in credits before it runs.
  • Apollo's job postings for a company with no public job board, about 1 credit per company, only when Job postings from Apollo is on in Settings, Connections.
  • Revealing a person's email in a pursuit, 1 credit each, only when you choose to. Finding people is free.

Every Apollo call reads your Apollo balance first and sets aside its credits before it runs. It is refused when your Apollo plan doesn't have enough left this cycle, or when it would go past Credits set aside each month in Budgets and spending (0 means CareerBot may use whatever is left in your plan, never more).

Automated Apollo work decides whether Apollo work runs on its own: On, Only when I ask, or Paused. See Budgets and costs.
